Dr. Galen Strawson's argument is based on the idea of the physicist Arthur Eddington, that since science reveals only the structural
form of things and not their intrinsic nature, there is nothing that
prevents us from ascribing to these things the stuff of consciousness;
and that it is in fact silly not to, for we have a direct insight into
the intrinsic nature (or in Eddington's words, the "background") of a
certain small part of the universe, namely, the consciousness nature of
our brain, and it would be pointless to introduce some other nature
inconsistent with consciousness, and then wonder where the latter comes
from. The natural inference is that it is consciousness all the way down.
